This might get my vote for Most Underappreciated Song of the 1980s, which I’m pretty sure is not up for a vote anywhere. Peter Wolf, “Come As You Are” ( Come As You Are ) It’s usually the bridge that gets me.Įntrance closest to Sam Goody, bottom floor, Macy’s wing, Staten Island Mall, Staten Island, NY It really is a beautiful song, and both Collins and Marilyn Martin do an excellent job of bringing out the emotion in the lyrics without being overwrought (which was not an easy task in the music of the 1980s). Still, on the right day, it’ll hit me hard. Here’s another hot Collins duet, though it doesn’t hit “Easy Lover” heights. Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin, “Separate Lives” ( White Nights soundtrack) I have no plans to revisit, the movie or the video store, but the latter only because it’s been demolished. But she’s a pretty decent human being, so I plan on forgiving her on my deathbed.Īlso, I do remember trying to watch Down and Out in Beverly Hills on video when I was a kid but I fell asleep in the middle and it had to be back to Electronic Junction the next day. In an attempt to be a good boyfriend, I chose the former and ate the price of the two tickets. I had a ticket to see him and Jerry Lee Lewis play in the summer of 2001, but, long story short, my long-distance girlfriend at the time was visiting and was not interested in the show, leaving me with a decision to get to see her an extra day or send her on her way and go see Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis by myself. This one holds up pretty well too, because most Little Richard songs hold up pretty well, largely owing to the fact that Little Richard sang them. It’s maybe not the preferred way to catch on to Little Richard, but it doesn’t matter how you get there, just that you get there. I certainly heard “Tutti Frutti” before this song came out (if nothing else, I heard Mean Gene Okerlund’s version, which would be sad but somehow fitting for my life if that was the first time I heard “Tutti Frutti”), but this was the first time I really got into Little Richard. Little Richard, “Great Gosh A’Mighty” ( Down and Out in Beverly Hills soundtrack) Also, watching this performance from MTV in 1987 (which sadly succumbs to VHS issues before “Take It Easy” can conclude) has me thinking very positive things about Andy Taylor in 2022. So I am in no way ashamed that I have held on to this 45 for 36 years. I am also much more interested in 1986 Janet Jones (two years away from her true cinematic peak in Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach ) than I was at the age of 9, so perhaps I’ll give this movie a whirl.Īnyway, the song still does it for me, and I definitely like it better than anything Duran Duran ever did. Oddly, though, it really makes me want to see the movie to see if all of it is as bad as this 10 seconds.
